The Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) is a gendarmerie-style military organization deployed across planets governed by the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance. It functions as both a paramilitary police force in peacetime and a frontline military unit during wartime.

Overview

Each ISA-administered planet maintains its own RRF units, with their quality, training, and effectiveness varying according to the level of funding and support provided by local governments. In peacetime, the RRF is primarily tasked with riot control and maintaining civil order. In wartime, it transitions into a combat role, effectively serving as the ISA’s primary defensive force until larger military formations can be mobilized.

Recruitment into the RRF emphasizes natural leadership ability, discipline, and personal traits suited to exemplary service.^[1] As elite soldiers, RRF personnel are expected to act as the first line of defense in hostile engagements, buying time for conventional ISA forces to establish more robust defensive positions.

Despite their elite designation, the United Colonial Nations has historically regarded the RRF as little more than an expanded colonial policing force. This perception was not universally accepted, with notable exceptions such as Jan Templar, an RRF officer, founding the ISA’s elite Special Forces division.

History

During the Second Extrasolar War, the RRF of ISA Alpha Centauri played a critical role in resisting the Helghan Empire's invasion of Vekta.^[2]

RRF units were heavily engaged in defensive operations, often fighting under extreme conditions and sustaining significant casualties. Their efforts were instrumental in delaying Helghast advances and stabilizing key positions on the planet.

However, the losses suffered during the Vektan campaign were severe. Following the successful expulsion of Helghast forces, the Vektan RRF was formally disbanded. The surviving personnel — numbering only a few dozen — were reassigned as commanding officers within the ISA Legionnaires, a naval special forces unit formed in preparation for a counteroffensive against Helghan.
